Our Analysis
We interviewed polypharmacy patients, geriatric pharmacists, and informal caregivers to lock the must-haves before opening a Figma file:
- Senior-first ergonomics: Type-scale floor of 17 pt, no triple-tap gestures, VoiceOver and TalkBack labels on every interactive element.
- Reminders that survive bad networks: Local notifications scheduled on-device, dose state persisted in SQLite, late-confirmation back-fill when the phone reconnects.
- Caregiver visibility: Family-circle invite with role-scoped access so an adult child sees adherence streaks without seeing free-text symptom notes.
- Pharmacy hooks: NCPDP SCRIPT-aware refill prompts and barcode-driven pill identification to catch the wrong generic substitution.
- HIPAA posture: Per-record AES-256 envelope encryption, signed BAAs with Firebase, audit log of every caregiver view.
Our Solution
We shipped MedRemind on React Native with a Firebase backend hardened under a BAA, dose schedules stored locally in SQLite so reminders fire even in airplane mode, OCR-driven pill identification via Google ML Kit, and a caregiver console that streams adherence streaks without exposing free-text symptom notes - all wrapped in a senior-first UI tuned by usability tests with users aged 62-84.
The Results
MedRemind has achieved remarkable success in improving medication adherence and patient outcomes. The app has seen rapid adoption among both patients and healthcare providers, with a 125% increase in user base within the first six months. Medication adherence rates among users improved to 89%, while the app maintains a 94% user retention rate.
